Project Description
Currently, at the end of each art unit my students complete a written reflection of their artwork. In these reflections students are asked to discuss the art making techniques they used and describe their work using the art vocabulary of the unit. My problem of practice is that my students are currently only integrating their vocabulary in their reflections on a surface level. My students are able to understand the art vocabulary when they are making art but currently cannot transfer the knowledge of the vocabulary when reflecting on their artwork. I would like to see my students transform to having a deeper knowledge of the vocabulary so they are able to transfer their knowledge of the terms from art making to discussing their artwork and as a result reflect more deeply on their artwork.
In an effort to reach this transformational goal, I feel my students could benefit from more practice using their vocabulary when discussing artwork. For this reason, I would like to implement the use of the Kidblog app as a platform for students to post images of their artwork, discuss their classmates work as well as reflect on their own. Students will be required to use their art vocabulary to critique their classmates artwork first and then reflect on their own. This will be implemented throughout the quarter (approximately 3-5 times). In this way they will get more practice using the terms in a context different from art making. I will evaluate students' personal art reflections on their blog space throughout out the quarter using a rubric. The rubric will assess if students are able to thoughtfully, successfully, and deeply apply their vocabulary across contexts.
